Successful teaching duties incumbent will be expected to conduct research in forgiving BISRU, along with an optional, but limited, as part of professional development. Flexible electronics represents a new class of emerging technology for the applications of large-area electronic products which can be attached over arbitrarily curved surfaces. Graphene, a one–atom thick layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal array, is the thinnest material ever studied. It is not only one of the hottest research topics in the world today, but has also received the highest recognition with the Nobel Prize in Physics 2010. It is among the most promising candidate materials for a variety of flexible electronic applications due to its unique electrical, mechanical and optical properties. The main purpose of the current position is to explore fundamentals and component technology based on graphene towards flexible electronic devices.

Flexible electronics is one of key research areas at the division of Solid State Electronics. The main research focus of the current position will be on the technology development of graphene manipulation and integration for flexible electronic components, and fundamental studies of the resultant graphene-based devices. The applications of interest include flexible transparent conductor, optoelectronic device, transistor and magnetoresistor.

The successful candidate should have a master of science in physics, chemistry, material science or equivalent. Strong collaboration spirit and good communication skills in oral and written English are required.

Insurance scholarships in Optimisation/Statistics and River Infrastructure Planning

Applications are invited for a full-time PhD studentship in the area of Optimisation/Statistics and River Infrastructure Planning starting in September 2010. The studentship, which is supported through an EPSRC Doctoral Training Grant, will involve working on an interdisciplinary research project entitled “Next Generation Decision Planning Methods for River Infrastructure Placement and Mitigation” under the supervision of Dr Jesse O’Hanley. The main objective of the project is to develop novel optimisation and statistical models for prioritising river infrastructure removal and other mitigation activities, as well as identifying sites for future river infrastructure expansion, while taking into account a host of key environmental/ecological impacts (fish dispersal, habitat fragmentation, river hydrology and morphological processes) and socioeconomic impacts (fishing, recreation, water supply, flood control and hydropower generation). Multi-objective and stochastic integer programming techniques will be investigated together with Bayesian statistical modelling and exact/heuristic solution methods.

The PhD student will join the Management Science group within the Kent Business School. The Management Science group is one of the largest and top rated research groups in the UK. Further advanced training in operational research and statistics is available through the EPSRC’s NATCOR programme. As part of the project, the PhD will also have the opportunity to reside for up to one academic term in the US in order to work and study under the guidance of a leading academic (Prof Michael Kuby) from the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University, specialising in the field of optimisation and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applied to transportation, energy, and environmental planning. Additional short-term visits to Scotland in order to work and liaise with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the main external project partner, may also be required.

Amount awarded

The studentship covers Home/EU fees as well as provides a stipend (approximately £13,300 p.a). Only UK and EU applicants are eligible to apply. The ideal candidate would normally be expected to hold a 2:1 or First class honours degree plus an MSc, or equivalently an upper 5-year undergraduate degree if coming from Europe, with a background in operational research, statistics, mathematics, computer science or some other quantitative discipline relating to the project. New Approaches to the Treatment of Cancer Insurance scholarships

Project Title- New approaches to the treatment of cancer: Ultrasonic delivery and activation of chemotherapy drugs PhD.
The transdermal delivery of drugs is important in modern therapy because it is a convenient method for targeted delivery. The tight packing-arrangement of skin cells prevents molecules from easily crossing, but the skin is permeable (eg HRT or nicotine patches). Ultrasound can affect skin porosity, slight histological changes occurring following sonication, these reverting to normal once exposure to ultrasound has stopped. The main objective of this project is to synthesis cancer therapy drugs and optimize a novel transdermal drug delivery system involving therapeutic ultrasound. The project will examine the effect of ultrasonic frequency and power on the penetration/transfer of drugs across membranes such as epidermis. Once this delivery system has been established it is intended that the subsequent efficacy of the drugs is established. In vitro studies show that low-intensity ultrasound can increase the cytotoxicity of chemotherapeutic agents to cancer cells. This is the result of increased intracellular drug accumulation. It is believed that the effects can be ascribed to an alteration in plasma membrane permeability, mediated by ultrasound. The final objective of this project is to examine the effect of ultrasound at different frequencies and powers on drug penetration into the cells, and on subsequent cell viability.
Candidate specification

The ideal candidate will have BSc Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology or Biological Sciences (minimum 2:1) with a laboratory based final year project. Some experience of working with drug synthesis and bio-analysis would be advantageous.

About Accountancy, Economics and Finance at SML

The Accountancy, Economics and Finance is the home of a dynamic group of researchers with a range of specialisations, benefiting from synergies with other departments of the School of Management and Languages. Staff currently hold positions as visiting faculty members in several transition countries, and have recently held posts in universities in Australasia and the United States as well as gaining further experience as practitioners in the private sector. Faculty members are also closely associated with international networks for the dissemination of new developments in their fields of research, both to academic and non-academic audiences.

In accountancy the major research themes of the department are in comparative international accountancy, the history of the accounting profession and the evolution of regulatory frameworks in transition and other developing countries. In finance research is being carried out in fields of corporate finance such as the cost of capital and governance mechanisms, and also in the structural modelling of financial assets and markets. Members of staff have recently presented and given keynote addresses at international conferences in these areas and continue to be at the forefront of research.

The expertise of our Economists spans a wide range of areas, from unemployment, macro and international trade to environmental economics and development. A particular strength is the economics of transition: the Centre for Economic Reform and Transformation (CERT) is an internationally recognised centre for the study of the transition economies.

CERT is a leading European centre for the study of transition from socialism to the market in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and East Asia, with a particular strength in applied microeconomic research. The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program (SIR) for Scholars to gain experience in U.S. higher education

The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) Program assists institutions historically underrepresented in international academic exchange and allows scholars outside the United States to gain experience in U.S. higher education.

Objective

The objective of the Fulbright Scholar-in- Residence (SIR) Program is to bring scholars and professionals from abroad to U.S. colleges and universities to significantly internationalize host institution campuses and curricula.

Preference is given to institutions that have infrequently hosted Visiting Scholars and serve student populations underrepresented in international exchange programs, and/or to colleges and universities that are Minority Serving Institutions. Such institutions include: small liberal arts colleges, community colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and other Minority Serving Institutions.

Under the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program, accredited U.S. institutions of higher education submit proposals to the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) to request Scholars for one or both terms of the academic year. Scholars teach and consult in area studies programs, interdisciplinary programs that focus on global issues or courses where participation of a foreign Scholar can provide a cross-cultural or international perspective.

Public-School Refugees Find Help at Private Colleges

Public School Private colleges seek help refugees

Private schools step in helping students in a position to classes they have to make, but not alarmed public schools and universities in California.

The University of San Francisco, for example, give, today announced plans for a series of classes to the rate of discount for public school starting in January are based. Each campus will serve about 250 students, said Jennifer Turpin, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

"We always knew that all this incredible need," he said. "How we respond, we will."

Scholarship Providers of the Year Named

When Ronald Simon’s company sold its first kitchen cabinet back in 1989, Simon hoped that his business would grow. What he never expected was to put hundreds of underprivileged kids through college. But that’s exactly what happened.

Today, Simon’s scholarship organization—the Simon Family Foundation— supports over 300 students throughout the country, spending roughly $32,000 on each, a year.

The Foundation was today named the Independent Scholarship Provider of the Year. Auburn University was named the College and University Scholarship Provider of the Year. The awards were given at the National Scholarship Providers Association annual conference in New Orleans. Both recipients accepted awards from FastWeb Publisher, Mark Kantrowitz, who hand-selected each winner.

Both scholarships are geared toward underserved and at-risk communities.

The Simon Family Foundation is unique in that it begins providing support the summer before students’ junior year in high school.

Simon scholars receive a renewable $4,000 college grant, but that’s not all. They also get $1,000 cash to open a bank account, a notebook computer, SAT/ACT test preparation courses, academic tutoring, college coaching and application assistance. The organization also provides them with college campus tours, life-skills training, financial literacy seminars, etiquette courses, peer and professional mentoring, exposure to the arts and even takes them shopping for business attire, including suits.

Kathy Simon Abels, executive director of the Simon Family Foundation and the daughter of Ron Simon, said her family came up with the idea for the scholarship after her father’s company, RSI, which manufactures cabinetry, among other things, grew to a successful level. According to its website, the company has over 5,000 employees and made over $700 million in its first 18 years of business.

Abels said the family had a round-table family discussion on what to do with the money. Together, they decided donating it to education was the best move.

Siam Cement Group (SCG) Foundation Scholarship Program

The SCG Foundation is pleased to grant up to 6 full scholarships for individuals wishing to study at the Master of Arts Program in International Development Studies (MAIDS) at Chulalongkorn University for the upcoming 2010-2011 academic year.

Please note that in previous years the scholarship was limited to full-time government employees or civil servants, but it is now open to non-governmental workers, students, and other individuals with a background in development, as well as government employees.

1. Eligibility (6 Scholarships)

Scholarships are open to government workers, non-profit sector employees, students and other individuals with a background in development from each of the following Southeast Asian countries:

Thailand
Vietnam
Cambodia
Laos
Indonesia
Philippines

The SCG Foundation and the MAIDS programme will seek to distribute one scholarship per country.

2. Scholarship Coverage

I) Living Expenses

- Roundtrip airfare (up to 25,000 baht)

- Housing (5,000 baht/month)

- Food (8,000 baht/month)

2) Education Costs

- Tuition Fees (Thai Scholar: 252,000 baht; International Scholar: 337,500 baht)

- Workshop and/or Fieldtrips (15,000 baht)

Total Scholarship Value

- Thai Scholarship: 464,800 baht/scholarship

- International Scholarship: 575,300 baht/scholarship

3. Scholarship Conditions:

I) Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for MAIDS admission AND be admitted to the MAIDS program.

II) SCG Foundation Scholars are expected to graduate within the prescribed 12 month period (excluding the pre-session course). Students who are required to enroll in additional semester(s) will have to bear the additional cost of living and tuition fees.

III) SCG Foundation Scholars must not be employed - either part-time or full-time - during their studies/scholarship tenure.

IV) Following graduation, SCG Foundation Scholars are expected to return to work for their home governments for a period of two years.

4. MAIDS Program Admission Requirements:

I) Entry Requirements

- Applicants should possess a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in the social sciences with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0.

- Applicants should also have 2 years work experience in a related field. Mature students, junior to mid-level government officials with experience in development are encouraged to apply.

II) English Language Requirements

Candidates will be required to demonstrate an acceptable level of language proficiency. Applicants should have achieved an English language score of at least 6.0 on the British Council IELTS, 550 in the paper-based TOEFL, 213 in the computer-based TOEFL, or 550 in CU-TEP (Chulalongkorn University Test of English Proficiency). These three above-mentioned tests are the only ones excepted by Chulalongkorn University. Please also note English tests scores must be less than two years old at the time of application.

Please note that these scores, although a minimum requirement for admission, do not guarantee successful admission or completion of the program. The candidate should feel comfortable writing graduate-level academic essays and participating in class discussions in English.

As stated above, MAIDS scholarship applications are due March 31st , 2010.

II) Required Materials

Students applying for the Master of Arts in International Development Studies must submit the following materials:

• Application Forms: The application form can be downloaded here. Please complete the form, either by typing or writing clearly in block letters.

• Transcripts: Applicants must submit an original or certified copy of their transcript from the college or university previously attended. Transcripts that are not in Thai or English must be translated and certified in the English language.

If you are currently enrolled in an academic programme, please submit an official report of your current mid-term grades. You can send your final grades at a later date when they become available.

• Photocopy of previous degree(s)

• English language test scores (if applicable): The programme accepts photocopies of English test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, CU-TEP) for the application process. Please note, however, that the admitted students will have to present the original score record to Chulalongkorn University at the beginning of the academic year.

Alternatively, the student can have ETS, the company that administers TOEFL, send the score directly to the programme. Chulalongkorn University 's TOEFL institutional code is 0227. The MAIDS programme does not have a departmental code registered with ETS, so make sure to write clearly “M.A. in International Development Studies, Faculty of Political Science” on the score report request form.

• Letters of recommendation: Applicants are required to ask two instructors or employers familiar with their work to send sealed letters of recommendation with letterhead and original signatures. Please also provide the following reference form to your referees and ask them to fill it out:

Please provide your referees with the above form and ask for a confidential reference to be returned to you in a signed and sealed envelope. Please return the unopened envelope to the MAIDS Office with the application form. The referee also has the option of sending the reference directly to the MAIDS Office.

• Curriculum Vitae/Resume: The resume must provide information on current and past employment, academic awards and scholarships, international travel, publications, and extracurricular activities, including volunteer work.

• Statement of Purpose: The statement of purpose should be between 600 and 1000 words, and include the following elements:

- Describe your most valued experience or accomplishment.
- Describe your research interests, and outline a tentative topic for your M.A. thesis.
- Describe your career expectations (personal and professional objectives), and explain how the M.A. in International Development Studies at Chulalongkorn will help you achieve these goals.

• Writing Sample: The MAIDS programme requires all applicants to submit a sample of their critical or analytical writing. This may be a paper written for an undergraduate course, a published academic or journalistic article, or another appropriate writing sample. Applicants should briefly explain - using a separate document - the context in which the sample was originally written, including information on the nature of the publication in which it appeared, and the date of publication.

The objective of the sample writing is to assess the applicants' analytical and writing skills. The ability to write clearly in English – both for native and non-native speakers - is essential to fulfill the written requirements for this M.A. programme in International Development Studies.

• Photocopy of ID Card (for Thai applicants) or passport (for non-Thai applicant) .

• Two photographs: Applicants must submit two recent one inch photographs.

• Application fee: There is a non-refundable application fee of 800 Thai baht .

The fees can be paid in cash at the MAIDS office, or deposited directly in the programme's bank account (see details below). If the money is transferred to the programme's account the applicant must submit a photocopy of the bank transfer receipt with the application. Applicants who are not in Thailand must pay the fee by sending us a $30 US “Bank Draft” only (US$26 plus US$4 for bank charge).

Please note that the programme will not begin to process any application until the reception of the application fee has been confirmed.

Applicant Interviews

The MAIDS admissions team may decide to interview applicants by phone or in person if it is viewed as necessary. The purpose of the interview is usually to ensure that students have an adaquate understanding of development issues combined with an appropriate level of English language proficiency to complete their M.A. degree within the prescribed 12-month period.

Please note that the MAIDS admissions team will inform those students requiring after the application deadline.

MAIDS Pre-Session

Shortlisted students who are accepted to the programme following their interview may also be required to participate in a four-week intensive introductory session in Bangkok prior to the beginning of classes in October. This session will cost approximately 15,000 baht and will include classes in the following areas: Academic English, Research Methods and Development Theory.

Acceptance of Admission

Successful scholars will be notified whether or not they must attend the pre-session at the same time they are notified of their scholarship status (see above timeline). If the pre-session is not required, scholars may come to Thailand in early September 2010 to settle in Bangkok. The MAIDS program will begin the first week of October 2010.
